Storm damages trees, knocks out power

Storms that passed through the area Saturday evening and night spawned strong winds that left a path of destruction in the Penn Forest Streams development.

While no one was injured and homes weren’t damaged, full grown trees were toppled from their roots and others were snapped and splintered.

Across the region, the storm brought trees down onto roads and streets, including Route 248.

Pockets of power outages were reported throughout the area as well.

Penn Forest Streams residents worked early Sunday morning to cut up a large pine tree that had fallen across the road.

The destruction seemed to make a clear path, affecting several properties in the 100-zone of Yellow Run Road, and Leslie Lane which runs adjacently.

“It sounded like a freight train,” reported one resident whose carefully manicured lawn now prominently featured unintentionally felled trees.

When asked what he thought might have actually happened here, he confidently answered, “oh, it was a tornado.”

Though his theory is unconfirmed by the National Weather Service, the storm was unlike anything long-standing residents had experienced in the past. A tornado would be a very uncharacteristic weather event in this densely wooded mountain community. The area has seen an uptick in property development, culling and thinning the once dense woods and natural streams of the location.
