Fern Ridge State Police - Drugs/DUI Cases

State police at the Fern Ridge barracks reported on the following driving under the influence and drug cases:

• Police said the driver of a vehicle they stopped for a traffic violation at 9:40 a.m. March 28 is facing drug possession charges. It happened on Interstate 80 westbound in Kidder Township.

• Police said they are investigating a drug possession report that they received at 5:33 p.m. April 5.

They were called to routes 115 and 209 in Chestnuthill Township to investigate the incident.

• A 24-year-old Shenandoah man is facing charges of possession of a controlled substance (marijuana) and possession of drug paraphernalia after a traffic stop they made at 6:50 a.m. March 29.

Police said they stopped the man for speeding on Interstate 80 eastbound in Kidder Township.

• A 32-year-old Effort man is facing charges of driving under the influence after a traffic stop made by state police at the Fern Ridge barracks at 1:28 a.m. March 24 at the intersection of route 115 and Emma’s Way in Chestnuthill Township.

Police said they stopped the man for violations while he was driving a 2007 Kia Sportage, after which time they determined him to be under the influence.

• Joshua M. Berkowitz, 19, of Staten Island, New York, was charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance or alcohol by state police at the Fern Ridge barracks after a crash at 12:35 a.m. March 26 on Interstate 80 westbound in Kidder Township.

Police said he was driving a 2022 Mercedes-Benz eastbound in the westbound lane of travel. They said due to his physical condition, he steered into the guide rail and exited the roadway, coming to rest in a grassy area. They said the car sustained disabling damages and was towed from the scene.

Police said a passenger, Diego S. Martinez Gonzalez, 20, of New York, New York, had facial injuries and was transported by Lehighton Ambulance Association personnel to the St. Luke’s Hospital, Carbon Campus, Franklin Township. Police said he was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

• James Laneve, 24, of Pocono Lake, is facing charges of driving under the influence of a controlled substance and alcohol after a traffic stop made by state police at the Fern Ridge barracks.

Police said they stopped Laneve in a 2006 Dodge at the intersection of routes 115 and 903 in Tunkhannock Township at 9:31 p.m. April 4 because he was driving with no headlights on at the time. He was taken into custody and transported to the Monroe County Correctional Facility, Snydersville, for processing.

• Amanda Beyer, 34, of Stuart, Florida, sustained head and neck injuries in a one-vehicle crash in which she was arrested for driving under the influence.

State police at the Fern Ridge barracks said she was transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, after the crash at 9:34 a.m. April 9 on Route 115 in Chestnuthill Township. A passenger, Brian M. Whelan, 34, of Gillette, New Jersey, was uninjured.

Police said Beyer was driving a 2002 Ford F-350 southbound and negotiating a right-hand curve when she lost control of the truck and it struck an embankment on the right side of the road. It continued southbound and struck an embankment a second time before coming to a halt, police said.

The vehicle sustained heavy front-end damages.
