Schuylkill Twp. tables road decisions until May

The Schuylkill Township Supervisors were slated to take action on a number of road issues, but found they didn’t have the answers they needed to make the decisions.

So the supervisors ended up tabling most of the issues for their next meeting May 1.

Supervisor Gary Feathers said the township is setting up an agreement with the West Penn Township Board of Supervisors to weigh heavy trucks traveling Sanderson Street. In March, the supervisors approved an ordinance setting a 13-ton weight limit on the road, because large tri-axle trucks are damaging the road.

The township police department is not trained or certified to weigh trucks, but the West Penn police are.

“We have a mutual agreement with them (West Penn Township) to weigh the trucks,” Feathers said. “Their officers will then train our officers and help them get certified to weigh the trucks.”

However, Feathers said West Penn has not approved the agreement yet, and won’t do so until their next meeting May 1. So the supervisors tabled that action.

The only other action they took was to schedule spring cleanup, which will be held Saturday, June 24, with a rain date of Saturday, July 1.

They also tabled action on approving final language on the Sanderson Street ordinance, because they didn’t have that final language.

The supervisors also tabled action on awarding road contracts, again for a lack of information.

Earlier this month, a representative of the Comcast cable TV network approached the supervisors about a franchise agreement. The supervisors also tabled that action until a review comes back from the township solicitor, Joseph Baranko.

Feathers said Police Chief Frank DiMarco has given the supervisors copies of ATV ordinances from other municipalities for the supervisors to look at as they consider a new ATV ordinance of their own.

Denise Hill, the township secretary, said in the first month the township has had its new LED streetlights, the township’s light bill went down from $2,200 to $907.
