Zion’s free dinner

The Brodheadsville church is hosting another free community drive-through dinner tonight from 5 to 6 p.m.

It will be a breakfast for dinner theme consisting of pancakes and sausage, fruit salad, and a dessert.

Members of Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran are slated to help.

Resource fair

The PVHS Gymnasium will be the site for a MC Transition and Community Resource Fair from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.

Food seminar

Effort UMC is presenting a free food education seminar by Mackenzie Borger, RD, LDN, through the Western Pocono Women’s Club on how healthy eating can improve the immune system at 7 p.m. today, April 26, May 3 and May 10.

Road closed

The Keystone Road in Eldred Township will be closed for maintenance tomorrow.

McMichaels UMC

McMichaels UMC is accepting hoagie orders through tomorrow. Call Pastor Ed at 610-597-1030 for more information. There will be a variety available.

Ordered hoagies must be picked up at the church from 10 to 11:30 a.m., April 27.

The church is also hosting a homemade pizza sale, with orders due by May 11 with Martha Stout at 570-992-6742. Pickup is at the church in McMichaels before 11 a.m., May 20. The pizzas are 12-inch cheese only.

PVE showcase

Thursday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. PVE will hold its Academic Showcase.

Eldred cleanup

Eldred Township’s cleanup will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Dumpster items can be brought to the township’s Municipal Building at 490 Kunkletown Rd., in the rear. Tire recycling is available there also.

Healthy Steps

The Brodheadsville Senior Center, at the Zion Lutheran Church complex, Brodheadsville, is offering Healthy Steps in Motion on Friday and next week Tuesday as well as May 5, 12, 19 and 26.

PVEN Open House

The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network is holding an Open House this coming Saturday. It take place between 9 and 11 a.m. at the PVEN site at 2336 Route 209, Sciota.

The PVEN hosting a Pampered Chef fundraiser to benefit its many services and clients.

During the month of April, 25 percent of items ordered will benefit PVEN.

Products are shipped directly to whoever orders.

In the past month the PVEN served 262 families via its Food Pantry; 24 families via its Clothing Closet; 72 families by way of the Diaper Pantry and 85 through the Menstrual Hygiene Pantry, totaling over 1,000 individual lives served for various needs.

Lions meet

The Western Pocono Lions Club will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday at Cherry’s Restaurant in Kresgeville for its monthly dinner and business meeting.

Effort pantry

The Supplemental Food Resource Center at Effort United Methodist Church will be open from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday.

It serves the communities of Albrightsville, Blakeslee, Brodheadsville, Effort, Gilbert, Kunkletown, Kresgeville, Saylorsburg and Sciota.

Dinner orders due

Sunday is the deadline to place turkey dinner takeout meals from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Kresgeville, which is having a turkey takeout dinner on May 6. Dinner includes turkey, filling with gravy, carrots, applesauce, roll and choice of molasses or apple cake.

To order call 570-688-5381 by Sunday. Celery seed dressing is available for sale in quart or pint.

Pickup dinners between 4 and 5:30 p.m. on May 6 at the church.

This Sunday’s services, at 8:30 and 10:30 p.m., will be healing services.

Bingo Monday

The American Legion Post 927, Gilbert, will host another open to the public Bingo Night, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

AL Sons meet

Sons of the American Legion, Post 927, will meet for its monthly gathering at 7 p.m., Tuesday, at the post home in Gilbert.

Spring flea market

The Effort Women’s Group is hosting a spring flea market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 6.

Since April 23 to April 29 is National Library Week, WPCL is celebrating with special programs and contests all week leading up to Carnival Night (grades K-5) at 6 p.m., April 27.

Hoagie pickup

Folks who ordered hoagies from the Polk Township Ladies Auxiliary are reminded that said hoagies must be picked up at the Kresgeville firehouse on April 25.

Hospice training

The Lehigh Valley Hospice-Pocono in East Stroudsburg is currently taking applications for its next Hospice Volunteer Training Program. Book signing

The Ross Township Historical Society is hosting a presentation and book signing by Michael Mancuso and Eric J. Kerchner, co-authors of “Etna, A Murder Out of Time,” at 2 p.m., April 29, at the Ross Township Historical Museum located at 258 Anchorage Road, Saylorsburg. Light refreshments will be served. There is no charge for admission, but donations are welcome.

Zion Lutheran, Brodheadsville, is hosting a silent auction and spaghetti dinner from 4 to 7 p.m., April 29, to benefit Zion’s steeple fund and the Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network.

Healing service

Salem-St. Paul’s Church, Kresgeville, will have a healing service at both services, 8:30 and 10:30 a.m., April 30.

Band & breakfast

St. Matthew’s UCC, Kunkletown, will have the band play at the 9 a.m. worship service on April 30 and breakfast will be served by CIA (Christians in Action) after the service for a donation towards the social hall floor.

Car & bike show

The PV Class of 2024 is having a Car & Bike show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 30. There will be prizes, food trucks and free admission for spectators, according to the calendar posting.

Purse bingo

PV Cubs is holding a Purse Bingo on April 30 at the Polk Township Volunteer Fire Company firehouse in Kresgeville. Doors open at noon, bingo starts at 1:30.

Scholarship news

As per Effort UMC, on May 1 the Education Society of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church will begin accepting grant applications to help worthy United Methodist students pay the cost of higher education for the 2023-2024 school year.

The grants are for students seeking undergraduate education and qualified career preparation in vocational, technical, professional, business, and similar arenas.

The grant application is available on the EPA Conference website, on the Higher Education Scholarships & Grants Web page. One should scroll down to the section titled Financial Aid Grant Program. There one will see the 2023-24 Education Society Grant Application. The Eastern Pa Conference website is: https://www.epaumc.org

Day of Prayer

St. Peter’s United Methodist Church, on Rt. 115, Saylorsburg, will host The National Day of Prayer on May 4. The church sanctuary will be open for personal prayer beginning at 3 p.m.

Community worship service begins at 7 p.m. This is a nondenominational prayer event.

The entire community is invited to worship at the church and pray for government officials, military, the educational system, families, including children, community volunteers, and spiritual leaders.

Planting ahead

The Garden of Giving, in McMichaels, has scheduled its big planting of 2,600 seedlings for May 20-21.

Hours will be 9:30 to 4:30 p.m., with lunch provided. Sunscreen, water and planting supplies will all be ready for the volunteers. They can enjoy a nice lunch break in one of the two new pavilions.

Everyone’s help is appreciated, whether volunteers stay for the day, an afternoon, or just an hour or so.

All are invited to stop by to see all that’s new this year, from the new raised beds, and vertical planters, to the pavilions.

Onion sets and the vertical planters were filled with soil and planted with three types of lettuce on April 15.

Firemen’s Festival

The four West End fire companies are hosting a joint West End Firemen’s Festival June 1 through June 3 at the West End Fairgrounds.

Thursday and Friday hours are: gates open at 5:30 p.m.

Thursday’s entertainment is Timewhys from 6 to 9 p.m.; Friday is Cramer Brothers from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, the gates open at 3 p.m.

with the entertainment being Chris Eckert from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and the Brian Dean Moore Band from 6 to 9 p.m., with fireworks at 9 p.m.

Vendors wanted

Middlecreek Christian Church, Kresgeville, is hosting an outdoor flea market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 10.

Vendors can reserve a space by calling 570-629-4066 and getting other details, such as costs, by leaving one’s name and phone number where one can be reached. Space rental costs must be paid by June 1.

All donations will go to the church’s benevolence fund to help meet needs in the community.
