C & Y move happening soon

Carbon County Children and Youth will soon be able to relocate into its new location.

On Thursday, Commissioner Rocky Ahner said that the project to renovate 525 Iron St., Lehighton, is on track and is nearing completion.

He said that the cubicles for the office will be delivered and installed over the next few business days.

Ahner hopes to move the staff into the building and have them settled in next month.

As for the portion of the building that was demolished and will be rebuilt, Ahner said that portion is also moving along and is on schedule.

He said that there may be a slight delay with the move because of the upcoming May primary election, but overall, the project is nearing completion.

Carbon County purchased the Lehighton building last year from St. Luke’s University Health Network at a cost of $500,000.

In October, the commissioners, in a 2-1 vote, with Commissioner Chris Lukasevich voting no, hired several companies to complete the renovations at a total cost of $2,518,060. The cost is being covered using American Rescue Plan funding and then reimbursed by the Children and Youth department.

The building still houses St. Luke’s wound care center, which will continue to operate at its current location until at least next April.

The new building will provide Children and Youth with additional space and a county central location. The current office is located on the second floor of the 76 Susquehanna St., Jim Thorpe building, but the department has outgrown the location.
