‘Bye Bye Birdie’ to be performed in Lehighton

“Bye Bye Birdie,” the feel-good ’50s musical, is coming to the Lehighton Area High School.

The play will be performed April 20, 21, and 22.

“Bye Bye Birdie” tells the story of Rock ‘n’ Roll legend, Conrad Birdie (loosely based on Elvis Presley), who receives a draft notice to serve in the Army.

As part of a publicity stunt, he travels to the small town of Sweet Apple, Ohio, to sing one last song and plant one last kiss on a lucky member of his fan club.

This musical with book by Michael Stewart, music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Lee Adams, has been adapted into a 1963 film, a 1995 TV-movie, and 2009 Broadway revival.

This year’s production at the high school is directed by Laurel Zimmerman with musical direction by Lydia DeLong, and choreography by Sophia Wentz.

Principal actors are Brenna Hunt (Rose Alvarez), Hunter Andreas (Albert Peterson), Patrick Devitt (Conrad Birdie), Kylie Bishop (Kim MacAfee), Riley Fallon (Mr. MacAfee), Sophia Wentz (Mrs. MacAfee), Clarissa Smyth (Mrs. Mae Peterson), Timothy Arace (Hugo), Gabriella DiDea (Ursula Merkle), and Aiden Wowk (Randolph MacAfee).

Doors open for the shows at 6:30 p.m. and curtain times are 7 p.m. at 1 Indian Lane, Lehighton. Admission is $10 for Adults, $8 for Senior Citizens, and $5 for students. Tickets are available at the door or by visiting https://lahsdramaclub.ludus.com.
