Inmate overdoses at Monroe Co. jail

Monroe County Deputy Warden of Security Joseph McCoy reported Tuesday that a male inmate overdosed at the facility.

The unit was urine tested and three additional inmates tested positive.

McCoy said three canines from the state police came in that morning and searched all the male inmates and no additional contraband was found.

He said they are continuing to do the random error analysis and did 64 last week and one inmate was positive for morphine, McCoy said.

“I am waiting for lab verification to come back and speak with our medical department on the positive for morphine, which I thought was very strange,” he said.

Warden Garry Haidle reported that the jail census is 364 inmates.

“The (average daily population) is a little higher than it was in March at 360 inmates,” Chairman John Moyer said.

“We’ve been going around the 350 to 370 mark for awhile, and that’s kind of normal,” Haidle said. Another transfer to state prisons is expected this month.

The board is looking at a water study. Phil Diliberto, Deputy Warden of Operations, reported the water usage was good at Pleasant Valley Manor, across from the prison.

He said he did not think there were any issues and he did not think there was any reason to have the protection study done at this point, but Commissioner John Christy said, “As part of the whole overall project that we were doing I think it’s worth it.”

The correctional facility took possession of a new Ford Explorer a few weeks ago to replace the 2017 Explorer, making the whole fleet of transport vehicles relatively new and equipped with cameras.

The prison board went into an executive meeting after the meeting adjourned.
