Lehighton approves move of farmers market

A popular Lehighton downtown event will again be on the move next month.

Borough council on Monday unanimously approved a request to move the Lehighton Downtown Farmers Market to Sgt. Stanley Hoffman Boulevard from the borough’s Lower Park.

Council’s action came after it heard from Main Street manager Bambi Elsasser, who said the farmers market would like to make the move starting May 13.

Before its approval, several council members had concerns.

Councilwoman Lisa Perry said she was concerned about parking, while Councilwoman Autuman Abelovsky said she was worried about the traffic.

Elsasser said the vendors would be located in the grassy area across from the Lehighton Outdoor Center along Lehigh Drive.

Councilman Donnie Rehrig also expressed some reservations.

“We got a lot of things to think about,” Rehrig said. “Like where people are going to park.”

Councilman Ryan Saunders said he believes it would be more feasible to have vendors set up at the Lehighton D & L Trailhead by the Lehigh Valley Caboose.

Elsasser said the market would be held from 9 a.m. to noon on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month.

She said there would likely be somewhere between 6 to 10 vendors who would set up.

Afterward, council agreed to move the event to the Lehighton D & L Trailhead by the Lehigh Valley Caboose.

Hosted by the Lehighton Downtown Partnership, this year’s winter market began in November and runs through April.

Remaining dates for the winter market are April 8 and April 22.

The Summer Market will then start up, and anyone interested in being a vendor may call 610-509-6465, contact bambie@carboncountychamber.org, DiscoverLehighton.com, or follow them on Facebook at Lehighton Downtown Farmers Market.
