Argument begins in Lehighton, ends in Hazleton shooting

An argument that began at a new restaurant in Lehighton ended with two people being injured during a shooting at a restaurant in Hazleton early Monday morning.

Lehighton Police Chief Joe Sparich said police received a call at 5:12 a.m. Monday of a report of an alleged altercation at Pleasure Lounge Restaurant & Bar at 201 North First St.

“All we were aware of at that time was an altercation occurred, (then) it kind of ended,” Sparich said. “Then we hear from Hazleton city that morning there was a shooting at that restaurant.”

According to a published report, the shooting occurred at the Sazon Latino restaurant at 58 North Wyoming St. in Hazleton.

Two people were hospitalized following the 6:20 a.m. shooting in Hazleton. One person suffered non-lifethreatening injuries, while the condition of the other person was unknown. Their names have not been released.

Sparich said borough police worked with Hazleton City Police to share details and whatever information they needed in assisting and identifying the suspects.

“We assisted them with their investigation,” he said. “The altercation that we responded to, (there were) no victims making a report.”

Sparich said borough police responded to the disturbance.

“Upon their arrival, there was people outside; everybody was just kind of dispersed,” he said. “Officers spoke to security, security related there was an altercation inside, and all parties involved in the disturbance were kicked out of the place.”

Hazleton chief Brian Schoonmaker said all the people involved in the shooting were from Hazleton.

Schoonmaker said the victims were taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital at Cedar Crest.

He said two shooters were involved. One came in the restaurant shooting and the other returned fire from the restaurant.

Hazleton police are calling the shooting an isolated incident and that everyone involved has identified.

State police at Troop N Hazleton assisted along with the Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office.

No arrests have been made.

The Pleasure Lounge is listed as being open for lunch and dinner from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
