Wildlands Conservancy

The Wildlands Conservancy announced community and educational programs for April.

Several of the events in April are free of charge; others at a low fee.

Sunday: Get Out for Wellness: Camp William Penn 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. at Camp William Penn, Porter Township, Pike County GPS 41.153404, -75.150625, in an area very popular for bird watchers. There is no charge for this event but please register.

April 5: National Walking Day is coming up! Gradual climbs and descents, along with mostly wide, grassy trails make this an easy to moderate hike.

April 5: Wildlands Conservancy: You and Me @ Dorothy Rider Pool Wildlife Sanctuary: Tree Tea Party 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Dorothy Rider Pool Wildlife Sanctuary, 3701 Orchid Place, Emmaus, for children aged 3-5 and their grown-ups. Learn how to identify several species of local trees, then gather to sip your tea while experiencing a live animal presentation, and then take home samples and recipes. There is a charge. April 8: Wild in the Parks! Art at Arts 11 a.m.-noon at the Arts Park, 24-32 North 5th Street, Allentown. Enjoy an art in nature activity at Arts Park, directly across from the Allentown Art Museum. April 11: Wildlands Conservancy: Pre-K Pathfinders Trexler Nature Preserve: Forest Friends 10 a.m.-11 a.m. at Trexler Environmental Center, 4935 Orchard Rd, Schnecksville, for 3-5 year olds and their adults. Learn about the animals that call Trexler Nature Preserve home. Meet some of our educational wildlife and enjoy an outdoor expedition. There is no charge, but preregistration is required.

April 14: Tiny Frogs, Big Peeps!, Bear Swamp Park 7 p.m.-8 p.m. at Bear Swamp Park, 1280 Lake Minsi Drive, Bangor. Swamps are perfect places to search for spring peepers and other spring-breeding amphibians (like frogs and salamanders). There is no charge, but please register.

April 15: Get Out! for Wellness: John M. Mauser Nature Education Trail System 10 a.m.-noon at John W Mauser Environmental Center, 7701 Martins Creek-Belvidere Hwy., Bangor; these trails are appropriate for all ages. Our walk takes us above the Delaware River to an overlook platform for great views of rock formations, part of the “Rickenbach Dolomite of the Beekmantown Group” that loom over the Delaware. There is no charge, but please register.

April 15: Plein Air Painting Workshop with Anthony Smith Jr. and David Sommers, a 6-week workshop of 2 classes per week: Saturday morning classes (4/15-5/20) will be at Trexler Nature Preserve Environmental Education Center, 4935 Orchard Rd., Schnecksville, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Monday evening classes (4/17-5/22) will be held at the Midnight Gallery, 4315 Independence Drive, Schnecksville, from 5-7 p.m. There will be a closing reception at the Midnight Gallery on Saturday, June 10 from 6-9 p.m.

April 21: Spring Peeper Hike for Families - South Mountain Preserve 6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Boroline Park/ Alpine Street Trailhead, 554 Alpine Street, Emmaus. Don’t miss this opportunity to visit the research areas of South Mountain to search out Mother Nature’s “sleigh bell chorus.” In addition to spring peepers, we’ll also search for salamanders and other signs of spring. There is a fee and advance registration is required.

April 23: Wildlands Conservancy: Get Out for Wellness: Cove Ridge Trail, Beltzville State Park 1-3 p.m. at Wild Creek Falls Trailhead - Beltzville, 6875 Pohopoco Drive, Lehighton. The Cove Ridge Trail is a 2.4 mile “lollipop,” moderate hike that crosses over Wild Creek and leads to a series of waterfalls, passing through deciduous and coniferous forests with views of Beltzville Lake. There is no charge, but please register.

April 23: Wildlands Conservancy: Spring Peeper Hike for adults - South Mountain Preserve 7:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at Boroline Park/ Alpine Street Trailhead, 554 Alpine Street, Emmaus. The call of the Spring Peeper is a sure sign that spring has arrived and our South Mountain Preserve is popular with these little frogs as well as salamanders. There is a fee; register in advance.

April 27: Wildlands Conservancy: PreK Pathfinders: Happy Campers, Wayne Grube Park 10-11 a.m. at Wayne Grube Park, 1200 Willowbrook Rd., Northampton, for 3-5 years-olds and their adults. Take part in a base camp experience complete with stories, and live animals. There is no fee, but space is limited, so please preregister.
