There are 34 applications for the position of chief of police in Lehighton.

Lehighton Borough Council members said the applications will be reviewed by the police committee, chaired by Scott Rehrig, after which time interviews will be scheduled.

Sgt. Joseph Lawrence is presently the senior officer of the department.

The chief’s vacancy occurred when Dennis Wentz, who had been the chief since 1994, resigned effective Jan. 23 to take a job with the U.S. Postal Service.
