Weissport working to reduce levee repair costs

Weissport is working with the Army Corps of Engineers to reduce the amount of money the borough would have to pay up front for repairs to the levee.

Borough council President Tom Ketchledge met with Rob Eckhart from the Army Corps of Engineers regarding repairs to the levee that run along the Lehigh River in Weissport.

The total estimate for repairs is about $730,000. The borough would need to pay $146,000 of that bill, with the state paying the rest.

The damage was apparently done during the storm of 2021 that washed away a lot of the stone along the river banks.

In the fall of 2021, after several days of heavy rain, the Lehigh River reached very high levels. After the water receded a bit, rain caused the river to rise a second time.

During that second wave, a lot of dirt and rocks along the bottom of the levee in Weissport were washed away.

A member of the Army Corps of Engineers was in the borough and met with then council President Arland Moyer.

Moyer said at that time that up by the trestle at the one turn where all the trees were, the high water just shoved it right against the levee and washed a lot of the dirt and rocks away.

The levee itself was not damaged, but a lot of dirt along the bottom was washed away and needs to be replaced. The borough is responsible to make the repairs.
