For more than 60 years, volunteers have counted migrating birds of prey at Bake Oven Knob near Germansville. From their perch atop the Kittatinny Ridge, Lehigh Gap Nature Center’s Bake Oven Knob Hawk Count Team records an average of 10,000-plus migrating birds of prey each autumn.
These observations are reported to the Hawk Migration Association of North America to help scientists study bird populations and migration patterns.
LGNC welcomes new volunteers to join the Hawk Count, which runs daily during daylight hours from Aug. 15 through the end of November.
On April 15 from 9 a.m. to noon, LGNC will be hosting an informational hike and bird walk for anyone who would like to learn more about the hawk count.
If you are interested in joining the walk on April 15 or the hawk watch team, email LGNC Director Chad Schwartz at chad.schwartz@lgnc.org.
