Carbon office building damaged by water leak

Weeks after a water leak in its administration building, Carbon County is seeing damage in another building.

A sprinkler head in the 44 Susquehanna St. building failed Monday afternoon, flooding most of the first floor, Commissioner Chair Wayne Nothstein said.

Maintenance crews stayed late Monday and Servpro, a company specializing in cleanups, was brought in, Commissioner Rocky Ahner said.

The Election Office, located on the first floor, will be closed today, Nothstein said, but they hope to have the Public Defender’s Office, which is on the second floor, open.

The second floor and basement escaped damage, he said. Floor drains in the restrooms carried some of the water away, but some water was also cascading out of the building, he said.

The sprinkler was located inside a large first-floor closet, where ceiling tiles came down, he said. Most of the damage, though, is in a meeting room, Nothstein said.

They won’t know the full extent of the damage until molding along the floor can be removed, he said. They will also need to inspect some electrical, he said.

No equipment was damaged, Nothstein said, and the computer room is OK. Some of the bags used to carry election equipment did get wet, he said.

Nothstein did not know how long the Election Office would remain closed, but said the commissioners would be looking at the situation today.
