A sinkhole, estimated to be 30 feet wide and at least the same in depth, opened on tate Route 54 just past Tippett’s Road in Nesquehoning yesterday morning.

The collapse of an old railroad tunnel that once connected Hauto to the Edgemont section of Lansford is cited as the cause of the collapse.

Although it is not known who discovered the hole, a set of skid marks in the eastbound lane leads up to the very edge of the highway and over a section of road undermined by at least eight feet.

Bud Stann, PennDOT manager in Carbon and Schuylkill counties, said it appears likely the road will be closed to all except local traffic for a long time.
