Lehigh Twp. trail group hosts Palmerton walk

The Lehigh Township Rails to Trails held a town walk in Palmerton on March 11.

Nancy Thatcher, LTRT’s president, led the tour through the Palmerton Historic District, with the walk starting at the corner of 3rd Street and Delaware Avenue at 1 p.m. near the War Memorial.

The Palmerton Historic District is a national historic district, and it encompasses 1,262 contributing buildings, seven contributing structures (five railroad bridges, one road bridge, and one park gazebo), and four contributing sites (three parks and a cemetery). The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on Jan. 19, 2018, in recognition of its significance in community planning and development.

Thatcher said Jane Borbe, president of the Palmerton Historical Society, provided her with a lot of information. Thatcher picked the sites for the tour using one of the society’s publications. She also used some books from the Palmerton Library.

There were 25 sites on the tour which included homes, churches, railroad station and a railway overpass.

The LTRT is dedicated to supplementing and supporting local organizations that provide recreation for all groups.

Past town walks were held in South Bethlehem and Nazareth. LTRT is looking for people interested in helping and/or participating in their activities. The meetings are usually held at 7 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month at the township municipal building at 1069 Municipal Road, Walnutport. These houses on Lafayette Avenue were built in 1919 and called “Pants Button Houses” because it “looked like a line of pants buttons due to small size” it says in the tour's program. MICHAEL HIRSCH/SPECIAL TO THE TIMES NEWS
