Lehighton

By Josiah Kimmel and Gabriella De Dea

Hi readers, a lot has been happening in our town of Lehighton!

The FBLA/Student Council Volleyball Tournament has been postponed until March 31 due to the weather last weekend. We appreciate everyone’s flexibility as the event date has changed.

Wrestler Maggie Pagotto attended States last weekend at Central Dauphin High School in Harrisburg. She made history as Lehighton’s first girl wrestler to make it to states, congratulations Maggie!

The National Honor Society just completed its Would You Rather Spirit Week fundraiser. They created this idea by trying to do a spirit week, but with a twist. The student body was encouraged to vote between two themes for each day of the spirit week, and the votes were done using any change or bills. All money is being donated to the Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital.

Parents and drivers please note that access to East Penn Street from Route 443 will be closed. Please plan your travel accordingly. The newly constructed Ninth Street Bridge has been open and is the best alternative route.

Various summer camps and conferences are being offered to students at Lehighton such as the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) Conference, State Police Youth Week at Messiah University, and Keystone Boys State at Shippensburg University. Deadlines for each of these and more are approaching.

Lehigh Carbon Community College, LCCC, is also meeting with different classes at the high school to explore their options through LCCC like the College Scholar Program and Dual Enrollment for underclassmen, and high school seniors interested in attending in the fall.

Spring sports have begun and with practices underway, and closing in on the final quarter of the year, there is much more ahead.

That’s all for now from Lehighton,

Weatherly

By Michael Berger and Kelly Michaels

Starting this week off, we would like to congratulate Juliette Bartel. Juliette will be representing Weatherly at the National Youth Correspondents for the 2023 Washington Journalism and Media Conference in July.

In other news, spring sports will be kicking off with the first track meet on March 21, the first baseball game on March 20, and softball on March 22. Good luck, Wreckers!

Panther Valley

By River Knoblauch and Kyle Lin

This week the Panthers will be beginning the competition of the spring sports season. On Tuesday, the PV track and field team will be competing at Tamaqua against Nativity, alongside Marian and Weatherly. Later in the week a scrimmage will be held at Jim Thorpe with Palmerton, Weatherly and Marian. The PV baseball team is scheduled to play North Schuylkill at home on March 21, and the girls will be traveling to Nativity on March 24. Despite the beginning of a new season, two Panther players are continuing to shine in their winter sports. Going 4-0 at 235 pounds, Brenda Banks became a state champion on Saturday, March 11 after the first MyHouse Girl’s State Wrestling Championships at Central Dauphin High School. This win was not only a highlight of PV’s return of wrestling, but for the rise of girl’ wrestling as well. Michael Williams, a freshman PV swimmer, competed at the District 11 Swimming Championship with two personal bests, placing 12th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:13.49, and 11th in the 100 backstroke at 1:05.95.

On Wednesday, March 22, the Junior High eight grade team will be competing in the academic ACE competition against surrounding school districts, which will be hosted at the Panther Valley auditorium.

On March 13, female athletes gathered in the auditorium to hear a Female Empowerment Speech, which was directed by Jillian Hall, a medicine coordinator from St. Luke’s University Health Network.
