Man charged with killing fiance’s mother
A Long Pond man has been charged with killing his fiance’s mother during an argument Wednesday evening.
Damien Hoehler, 43, has been charged with homicide, recklessly endangering another person, simple assault and possessing instruments of crime. Pocono Mountain Regional were dispatched at 10:27 p.m. to 172 Shannon Drive, Tunkhannock Township for a reported gunshot wound.
The caller said her grandmother had been shot in the chest by her father, who was drinking.
Monroe County Control Center also received a call from Hoehler, who said he thought there was a home invasion but there was not and he shot someone. Hoehler said he thought he shot his mother-in-law.
Police located Diane Strohl, 59, of Saylorsburg lying on the floor between the living room and dining room with blood around her. EMS weren’t successful in attempts to revive her.
A handgun was lying on the kitchen table near Strohl’s body. The magazine of the handgun was removed and the gun was lying on top of bloody bathroom towels.
Strohl’s daughter and four children were in the basement.
She identified Hoehler as her fiance and father of her children, and that Strohl was her mother and they all lived at the residence together.
Strohl’s daughter stated Hoehler was outside of the residence banging on the door, and that when she opened the door, Hoehler pointed a gun at her.
She stated that Hoehler demanded to know where another man was, and at this point, Strohl’s mother moved past her and demanded that Hoehler drop the gun.
The gun went off and she saw her mother bleeding from her upper chest or neck area.
Strohl’s daughter said the man Hoehler was looking for was her mother’s boyfriend, who was at the residence but left before police arrived.
Strohl’s boyfriend went to police headquarters and reported that he and Hoehler had been drinking throughout the day up to the time of the shooting, and that he and Hoehler were outside when Hoehler pointed the handgun at him and told him to get in the car.
Strohl’s boyfriend said that Hoehler wanted him to take him to get methamphetamine, so he ran into the residence and locked the door. He went into the basement and told someone to call 911.
Strohl’s boyfriend said he feared that Hoehler was going to shoot him. Strohl’s boyfriend said this past weekend he and Hoehler were drinking at the home and Hoehler again wanted to leave the home and became irate when the boyfriend began to chase him through the home with a hatchet.
At one point Hoehler slammed the hatchet on the table near where Smith’s boyfriend was sitting.
Strohl’s daughter told police Hoehler is a recovering drug addict and is addicted to methamphetamine. Her mother had been staying with them to assist them with recovery and the children.
Police interviewed Strohl’s granddaughter, who confirmed that she called 911 from the first floor after her mother initially called but couldn’t speak. She said her father, Hoehler, was in the kitchen pacing about and her mother was in her bedroom.
Police interviewed Hoehler, who admitted to holding his firearm and pointing it at Smith, and that he had pointed the firearm at his girlfriend as he entered the home.
Hoehler said he shot Strohl, but did not mean to hurt her, and that he fired the gun in anger. He said he had made arrangements to purchase methamphetamine but Strohl’s boyfriend would not drive him to get it.
Hoehler confirmed that he had pulled the trigger and could not be certain if Strohl had touched the gun prior to it going off.
Hoehler is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing March 23 before District Judge Danielle Travagline.
