Fundraiser set for Monroe man hit by car

Tonight and Saturday night, Lynn’s Motel bar and lounge is hosting a two-day Irish dinner, basket raffle and 50/50 drawing to raise money for a Sierra View man who has been hospitalized after being hit by a car.

Around 6:56 p.m. on Feb. 23, Mike Unger was crossing Route 115 at the intersection with Gilbert Road to get food at the gas station across the street from the Effort Garage, where he works, when he was struck. He had been the sole provider for his family.

“He was hit by a car going approximately 40 to 50 mph and was flung 143 feet. He suffered multiple injuries including 11 broken ribs on his left side, four broken ribs on his right, a punctured lung, a broken neck, multiple breaks in his back, a broken collar bone, and multiple, severe fractures in his face. He’s been unconscious since the accident and is currently on a ventilator,” Ashleigh Unger, his daughter, posted on the GoFundMe page she created on March 3 to raise money to help with the medical expenses.

Jennifer Rufe, a bartender at Lynn’s Motel, was working the night of the crash.

“We heard the cop cars and saw it. Then we heard it was Mike who had been hit,” she said.

Bonnie Rufe, Jennifer’s mother, and Amy Miltner also work at Lynn’s Motel. The bar and lounge staff typically host meals on holidays like St. Patrick’s Day, Halloween and Christmas to raise money for charities.

As soon as this tragedy occurred, they decided to raise money for the Unger family.

“We don’t know him well, but he’s been in here to get takeout for his boss. We wanted to do something to help this local man,” said Rufe.

Miltner, who is the cook, has been preparing corned beef and cabbage, potato soup, Irish stew, and pistachio cake for the buffet table. Some other people are bringing desserts.

“My mom and I have been in the kitchen helping peel pounds of potatoes and chopping vegetables,” said Rufe.

The event will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. both nights.

It costs $10 per plate. Rufe said there will be St. Patrick’s Day specialty drinks at the bar.

Raffle tickets cost $5 for one; 5 for $10; and 15 for $20.

Rufe has gathered about 50 gift baskets and several gift cards from businesses including Wawa, Argot’s Hardware, A&J Pools and local pharmacies, and individuals.

“We’re going to do a 50/50 on Friday and one on Saturday. We don’t know how big of a crowd size to anticipate. Our bar has 10 stools,” said Rufe.

Rufe and her co-workers try to help anytime there is someone local going through a hardship.

“At this point, any help for my family will be so appreciated. I just want to help my dad any way that I can, and also help my mom so she doesn’t have to go through this alone,” Ashleigh Unger wrote on her GoFundMe page.

The address of Lynn’s Motel is 2642 Route. 115, Effort. The GoFundMe page is https://gofund.me/efebd195.
