Man who hit storefront charged with DUI

The Lehighton man who crashed his pickup truck into Country Tile in South Tamaqua on Feb. 19 faces a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol, Tamaqua police said.

Robert G. Piepmeyer Jr., of German Road, was traveling north on Route 309 when he drove across all lanes of travel. His vehicle hit several railroad ties, and crossed a parking lot before it struck and entered the south side of Country Tile, police said.

Country Tile remains closed while repairs are being made.

Piepmeyer told police he blacked out before the 4:23 p.m. accident, and told emergency responders that he had a few beers hours earlier at his home.

He was taken by helicopter to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest.

Blood was drawn that evening, and revealed that he had a blood alcohol content of 0.12 %. Police said no drugs were found in his blood.

He is being charged with DUI, first offense, DUI high rate of alcohol and summary traffic offenses.

He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing April 11.
