ON THIS DATE MARCH 15, 1987

The ceremonial lighting of candles, the traditional breaking of a Champagne glass and the sealing of a bottle of vintage wine marked the solemn end to the World War I Last Man’s Club of the Lehighton American Legion Post.

The club was deemed ended because the last two members died within the past year.

Officers of the remaining Last Man’s clubs took part in bidding farewell to the World War I members by gingerly tapping, with shaking hands, the respective glasses until part of them broke. They included Frank Bayer, vice president of the World War II Last Man’s Club; Nevin I.H. Snyder, Korean War Last Man’s Club; and Edward Hoats, president of the Vietnam War Last Man’s Club.
