Coaldale police dept. at full force

Coaldale council members welcomed a familiar face back to the borough police department.

Joseph Krebs will return to the force as a full-time officer following a unanimous vote during Tuesday’s council meeting.

With his appointment, the police force will operate with four full-time officers - as it had until about two years ago.

His appointment was recommended by borough police Chief Keith Krapf. Councilwoman Yvonne Stoffey read a letter penned by Krapf that asked council to consider Krebs.

“This position has been vacant for over 2 years,” Krapf wrote in the letter. “Our department as well as all law enforcement entities have seen a significant decrease in applicants, especially those with law enforcement experience.”

Because of that, he said, the department has been struggling to cover shifts.

Krapf noted that Krebs has more than 11 years of experience in law enforcement, including 5 years with the Coaldale force.

“Having previously worked with Mr. Krebs, I am confident that he will continue to be a tremendous asset to our department and our community,” Krapf wrote.

Councilwoman Claire Remington’s motion to hire Krebs was seconded by Councilman Francis Hutta, and passed unanimously.

“Welcome home,” council President Angela Krapf told Krebs.

Last month, Kevin Soberick was hired as a part-time officer.

Members also accepted the police report for February, which noted that the department collected $369.85, patrolled 2,015 miles and responded to 44 calls.
