Weissport discusses drainage project

Weissport Borough Council voted to have the borough engineer, Mike Muffley of Hanover Engineering, attend a meeting every other month at a cost of $240 per month, or as needed.

Muffley spoke to council about the drainage project slated for the intersection of Forge and White streets. According to Muffley, an application for a Community Development Block Grant was submitted October 2021, but nothing has been done with the project since then. That original grant was for $76,000 with the borough paying $2,500.

“I spoke with Jason Skrimcovsky, who maintains grants for Carbon County,” Muffley said. “Trying to have work put out for bid and started this spring is too soon. They are going to have another round of bids going out early summer; June or July,” Muffley said.

Council passed a motion to have Muffley get all the specifications and details necessary to move the project forward in order to apply for the bid for the summer.

Muffley will also be looking at two areas mentioned at the last meeting: Eliminating all parking on Railroad Street, and improving signage that Allen Street is a one-way street from Prospect Street to Bridge Street.

Parks and recreation

“We have four basketball courts; none of them work properly,” Council Vice President Joe Foster said. “We were able to fix up two courts properly.”

Foster said his next plan was to put two park benches in the park that are in the borough garage. He also presented an estimate of $1,594 to install a 4-foot chain link fencing along the back of the playground site.

The fence would run parallel to the levee and be 118 feet long from the sewer fence to the other existing fence. Borough workers would install the fence.

Council voted to table voting on the repairs pending a check to see what funds are available to pay for it.

Army Corps of Engineers will also be looking at the project, since the fence is close to the levee, and let council know if there are any issues.

Property deal

Council voted 3 to 1 to end a verbal deal with the property owner of a vacant lot at 321 White St. The deal was that the borough would cut grass and clear snow for the property in exchange for allowing the borough to dump piles of snow there.

Council determined that it was costing the borough money in worker hours to maintain the property.
