Snow, wind on the way

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for 12 to 18 inches in the higher elevations through Tuesday, but AccuWeather is predicting 1 to 3 inches of snowfall tonight into Tuesday.

Tom Kines, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather, said he believes 3 inches of snow are more likely in the higher grounds than in the valleys.

“I think most of the roads probably stay wet most of the time,” Kines said. “I don’t think this will disrupt travel a whole lot locally; I think for the most part, roads are just wet.”

Kines said he believes today could see rain or a little bit of snow falling, but not much accumulation, especially on the roadways.

However, the threat of precipitation will continue tonight and even into Tuesday for that matter, Kines said.

“Tonight, it could be rain or snow; might be an inch or so overnight tonight and I think that lingers into tomorrow morning,” he said. “Maybe there could be another inch up until tomorrow morning.

“I think most roads are going to be just wet. When you get into the higher grounds, there could certainly be some slippery spots.”

Kines said the wind on Tuesday is going to pick up, which is going to make it a very blustery day, and at the very least, produce snow showers.

“It’s going to feel like winter, if not look like winter,” he said, adding that temperature wise it will be in the mid-30s, but with the wind, will feel closer to 20. “Even if we don’t get a whole lot of snow, it’s certainly going to feel like winter tomorrow.”

Kines said the storm that’s going to bring this precipitation “is really going to intensify off the southern New England coast tomorrow and probably even tomorrow night.”

“That’s the reason why we’re going to get a lot of wind,” he said, adding that the heaviest precipitation is going to be in New England, and maybe the northeast corner of Pennsylvania. “So, anybody that’s traveling probably north of I-80 tomorrow, those areas could see several inches of snow.”

Kines said conditions are expected to rebound somewhat on Wednesday, with a return of sunshine and temperatures getting up to the lower 40s.

A brief warm-up looks like it’s in store for Thursday, as he said temperatures will probably reach the 50s.

By Friday, Kines could see temperatures could make a push for 60.

“I wouldn’t get too used to that,” he said. “It turns cooler over the weekend.”
