Walnutport resident wants to see volleyball court used more

A Walnutport resident has voiced his displeasure that a volleyball court is not being used more at a borough playground.

Donald Eckhart noted at Thursday’s borough council meeting that several years ago he made a $2,000 donation toward the volleyball court.

“I’m tired of going out to Bryfogle (Park) and seeing (all kinds of families), and the same thing happens at Eagles Nest (Park in Slatington),” Eckhart said. “But we’ve done nothing about it that I’m aware of.”

The volleyball court has been used, but not as much of late. Eckhart brought along with him samples of the sand he had collected.

Michael Wentz, borough grant coordinator, told Eckhart the sand the borough has is the same kind that’s in Lehigh Township.

Wentz said the sand has to come from Maryland, and told Eckhart he wished he had a better answer for him.

Eckhart said it doesn’t appear as if a volleyball court is a priority for the borough.

“It seems to me that it’s just put to the side again,” he said. “I’d like to see it actually have happened.”

Wentz told Eckhart to give him until at least the end of April to see what can be done.

Councilwoman Jen Wentz asked Eckhart to continue to be patient.

“Give us at least a chance to try,” Jen Wentz said. “Let’s try this first as a recommendation.”

In February 2019, Eckhart encouraged the borough to ramp up its efforts to add a volleyball court as a recreational activity.

Michael Wentz previously said everything had been donated and paid for, and that all the work had been done in house.

Wentz previously said the sand is beach sand.
