Winter storm warning: Snow to arrive this afternoon

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the region. The warning is in effect from 1 p.m. today through 10 a.m. Saturday.

Predicted snow totals vary from 2 to 5 inches in Tamaqua to 6 to 8 inches in the Brodheadsville area.

Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute.

If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

The following schools have announced early dismissals:

• Carbon Career & Technical Institute: Jim Thorpe and Weatherly students at noon, Panther Valley students at 11:30 a.m.

• Jim Thorpe: High schools students at noon; elementary at 1 p.m.

• Tamaqua: high school at 11 a.m., elementary at noon. No after-school activities.

• Panther Valley: high school at noon, elementary at 1 p.m.

* Weatherly: High schools students at noon; elementary at 1 p.m.
