Winds blow roof off West End Fire Co.

Strong winds caused a roof to blow off the West End Fire Company of Brodheadsville.

Jeff Weiss, president of the West End Fire Company of Brodheadsville, said he isn’t exactly sure when the situation occurred, as he only saw a picture that was sent to him.

“We’ve contacted the contractor that does our roofing,” Weiss said. “That is the only spot on that building that has not been replaced in the past seven to eight years.”

Weiss said that where the damage occurred covers the area over top of the fire company’s biggest trucks.

“Right now, my biggest concern is that we secure everything underneath it, at least get it fixed so that not to do any more damage and that nothing else occurs to the apparatus,” he said. “The roof covers our three current operating pieces, as well as some storage, All-Terrain vehicles, and our old 1932 Buffalo fire truck.”

Weiss said the fire company does have insurance, and added that its insurance adjuster has already been out to take pictures.

“Last year, we did a little piece bigger than that area, and that was about $35,000,” he said. “So, I would assume (this cost) would be somewhere between $20,000 to $30,000.”

Weiss said that if the insurance wouldn’t cover the entire cost, funds would have to come out of the fire company’s savings account or current revenue streams (such as dues, or township tax appropriation).

“I’m a little surprised, but not really; last night it was windy and woke me up so many times,” he said. “You don’t ever want to see that happen.”

Fortunately, Weiss said he doesn’t anticipate the fire company’s services will be affected.

“It’s just a part of the fire company,” he said. “Taking care of our equipment, our buildings, having a place to store our apparatus.”
