Lehighton considers benches, bike racks

Benches and bike racks could eventually grace downtown Lehighton.

Bambi Elsasser, Main Street Manager, told borough council on Monday that it’s part of a beautification project.

Elsasser said she applied for a grant for five benches for First Street.

She said it’s a matching grant, so the Lehighton Downtown Partnership would have to come up with $6,000 and the grant would dole out $6,000.

She also said she’d like to apply for bike racks for First Street.

“We want to encourage bike users on the D & L Trail to use the downtown area,” Elsasser said.

In other matters, Elsasser said that work is being done to the Lehigh Valley Caboose at the Lehighton D & L Trailhead.

She said cleanup of the Lehigh Valley Caboose has begun.

Elsasser also said the Lehighton Partnership and Jim Thorpe’s Trolley Co. is hosting a hop-on, hop-off Kilts on Wheels Pub Crawl in Lehighton will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday.

The event is being held to raise money for revitalization of Downtown Lehighton and the refurbishment of the Lehigh Valley Caboose at the Lehighton D & L Trailhead.

The tour will include six of Lehighton’s pubs and restaurants including Insurrection Distillery, Bonnie & Clyde Pub and Grill, Wine & More on 1st, Lehighton American Legion, Griff’s Ale Haus & Grille, and Radical Wine Company.
