Weissport rehires former police chief

At Monday’s Weissport Borough Council meeting, following an executive session at the end of the general meeting, council voted unanimously to rehire former Police Chief Matthew Williams.

Williams will start March 21.

“I made a mistake by leaving the first time,” Williams said. “I should never have left.”

Council had received more than a half-dozen applications for the position, and all were contacted about scheduling an interview. Only two were interviewed; the rest either declined to be interviewed or didn’t show up for their interviews.

John Urbanski’s last day as police chief was Monday.

Urbanski had sent borough council a letter offering to extend his stay until a new chief was in place, but council voted to decline Urbanski’s offer with Williams’ hiring.

Council Member James Osborne made the motion “to hire Matt and bring him back starting the 21st of March, on a 30-day probation at $17.50 an hour as Officer in Charge; and, to be brought back as Chief after the thirty days, after the probation period is up, at $18.50 an hour.”

Williams will be officially sworn back into office at the March 20 council meeting.

Weissport Mayor Paulette Watson welcomes back Matthew Williams as Officer in Charge. He will be named police chief after a 30-day probation. Williams' start date is March 21. JAMES LOGUE JR./SPECIAL TO THE TIMES NEWS
