A man who stole an ambulance and was later apprehended in Carbon County will spend between nine months and just under two years in prison.
Frantz Bernard, 34, of Tobyhanna, was sentenced Tuesday in Monroe County Court after pleading guilty to charges of recklessly endangering another person, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and criminal mischief.
According to an affidavit of probable cause, Chris Washo of the Stroud Area Regional Police Department responded to the Lehigh Valley Hospital - Pocono in East Stroudsburg on May 24, 2022, after a Bushkill EMS employee reported his ambulance was stolen while dropping off a patient at the emergency room.
Contact was then made with Lehigh Valley Pocono security, who reviewed video footage at the entrance of the ER, which captured Bernard get into the ambulance and drive away with it.
A police alert was then put out to the surrounding jurisdictions and Pennsylvania State Police Lehighton conducted a traffic stop on the ambulance in the area of Harrity Road and Interchange Road in Franklin Township, where Bernard was taken into custody.
During Tuesday’s sentencing, Bernard was ordered to pay $2,500 in restitution.
