Monroe County woman charged in overdose death
A Monroe County woman has been charged with manslaughter in the death of a man who overdosed while they talked on the phone.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Trooper Ryan English of the Pennsylvania State Police - Lehighton barracks in the case against Sara Young:
At around 4:03 p.m. July 23, 2021, PSP Lehighton was dispatched to a home in the 1000 block of Interchange Road, Polk Township, for the report of an unresponsive 47-year-old male.
Before PSP arrival, West End EMS arrived on scene at which time no life saving measures were performed due to the victim being deceased.
The victim was located within his bedroom on the second floor of the residence lying on his bed with a cellular telephone on his chest.
A $1 bill was rolled up next to the victim’s body and an open waxine baggies consistent with drug paraphernalia used to package narcotics located in the cardboard box filled with garbage on the bed.
The victim was identified as James Hineline by his Pennsylvania Driver’s License. Monroe County Coroner Robert Davenport arrived on scene and pronounced Hineline deceased.
Later that day, an application for search warrant and affidavit of probable cause was completed for Hineline’s residence and cellular device.
The scene was processed and photographed by Troop N Forensic Service Unit member Trooper Timothy Gronski.
Seized from the scene were a black Apple iPhone contained within a red/black case; one waxine baggie containing suspected drug residue; one waxine baggie stamped “DIOR” containing suspected drug residue; and one $1 bill rolled containing suspected drug residue. A request for forensic analysis was completed.
On July 26, 2021, an autopsy was performed by Forensic Pathologist Rameen S. Starling-Roney, MD., and the cause of death was determined by Starling-Roney to be fentanyl toxicity.
On Aug. 5, 2021, an item was transported to the Monroe County Office of the District Attorney Criminal Investigation Division Detective, Digital Forensic Examiner Brian Webbe so that a digital forensic extraction could be completed.
On Sept. 22, 2021, USB containing digital data extracted from the victim’s cellular device was entered into evidence.
On Oct. 25, 2021, a lab report for the Wyoming Regional Laboratory was received, and the following results were that no controlled substances were detected in the item, the powder in another item contained fentanyl and tramadol, and no controlled substances were detected in another item.
On April 26, 2022, Trooper First Class Nicolas De La Iglesia and English conducted a review of the forensic digital content within the cellebrite extraction summary. Facebook messenger chat logs were observed between the victim and a Facebook account for Young, 47, of Pocono Summit, which spanned the date of July 22, 2021 through July 23, 2021, which encompassed the date of the victim’s death (July 23, 2021).
The conversation documents the use of the Facebook account for Young being involved in supplying controlled substances to the victim and messages encouraging the use of the controlled substances.
On July 22-23, 2021, Young coordinated for the victim to give her a ride and advised him she has stuff for him. They then spoke about him getting addicted within a few weeks, and plans are made for the victim to use the controlled substances at home to avoid driving while using them.
On July 23, 2021, Young asks the victim how he is feeling, and he relates that he felt fine, and it did not really feel like he did anything. Young then told the victim to do the other half, and through the context of the conversation, it is determined that Young was referring to heroin/fentanyl.
The victim asked Young if she thought that he would need more than what he bought on July 23, 3021, and she stated absolutely. The conversation continued, and the victim then advised Young that he is finally doing No. 2 and sends her a picture of a linier pattern of suspected heroin/fentanyl.
Young asked the victim if he wanted to continue to do drugs and the victim did not respond to Young being that he had overdosed.
On July 24, young attempted to call the victim about five times and then inquires if the victim is OK.
On Oct. 25, 2022, three applications for search warrants/affidavit of probable cause for Facebook accounts associated with the victim, Young and Young’s husband were completed.
On Nov. 21, 2022, Facebook records for the Facebook accounts were received and entered into evidence at PSP-Lehighton. A review of the records was conducted and the messages between the victim and Young from July 23, 2021 were observed on Young’s Facebook account, and images of Young were observed with her husband, family members and associates.
Multiple screenshots of messages between the victim and Young were also observed along with images of drug paraphernalia to include hypodermic needle, glass smoking device and waxine baggies.
A record management system query was conducted which indicated that Young had been arrested on Aug. 3, 2021 by PSP-Stroudsburg. During this incident, Young was found to be in possession of three banded bundles of waxine baggies stamped in red “hot pockets,” one banded bundle of waxine baggies stamped in blue “blue guardian” and a waxine baggie stamped in purple “DIOR” and other paraphernalia containing drug residue. A stamped waxine baggie “DIOR” is consistent with the stamp found within the victim’s bedroom.
A criminal history query indicated that Young has been arrested for drug-related offenses and is a known user of controlled substances.
A full review of the victim’s Facebook account and extracted data forensic download of his cellphone did not reveal any other possible sources of narcotics during the time frame of this incident.
Young faces charges of involuntary manslaughter; drug delivery resulting in death; manufacture, delivery, or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver; and criminal use of a communication facility.
