Storm brings 1-4 inches of snow
A minor storm dropped several inches of snow Monday into Tuesday.
Most areas in the region saw about 1-3 inches, according to Tom Kines, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather.
“Across the area, probably around 3 inches, some places around 4,” Kines said. “We probably saw the upper end of what we were expecting, which was about 1-3 inches.”
However, up in the Poconos, Kines said it was likely that some received between 5-6 inches of snowfall.
Northern Lehigh and Tamaqua area school districts were on a two-hour delay this morning. The rest of the region had flexible instruction days.
All Carbon Transit Services were canceled today.
“Obviously this morning, some of the roads are probably not in the best of shape, but should be improving as the day moves on,” he said. “If you got to clean your driveway off, do it today because it will freeze up tonight.”
Dave Frey cleaned his car off earlier this morning in the 200 block of South Fourth Street in Lehighton before he headed out to work.
“I could deal without it,” Frey said of the cleanup of the snow. “Got to make the money.”
Elsewhere, Julie Mickey said she was glad for the light shoveling as she cleaned sidewalks in the 300 block of South Third Street in Lehighton.
The good news, Kines said, is that temperatures this afternoon are expected to go quite above freezing, possibly to above 40,
“Any problems that exist now will not exist this afternoon,” he said. “One thing to watch out for tonight, temperatures drop well below freezing, probably down close to 20, so any slush out there this evening is going to freeze.”
Kines said Wednesday is shaping up to be a pretty nice day with quite a bit of sunshine, as temperatures are going to make a run for 50.
He said temperatures are also expected to be in the 50s on Thursday.
“If we can make it through this morning, things are looking better certainly for tomorrow and Thursday,” Kines said.
Despite those milder temperatures, Kines said we may not be out of the woods just yet this week, as there could be another system to worry about on Friday.
“Probably a potpourri of precipitation; snow, sleet, rain,” he said. “If there’s another cold air with the storm, we’ll see accumulation snow with it; (as of now), it’s too early (to tell), but certainly a possibility.”
Kines said all things considered, the area made out rather well with this storm.
“Last night’s snow, it’s a pain, nobody likes it,” he said. “At least the temperature’s getting above freezing today, tomorrow,” he said. “This snow is going to go pretty quick.”
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) lifted all speed limit restrictions on interstates in the region earlier this morning.
PennDOT said it will continue to treat roadways throughout the storm until precipitation stops and roads are clear.
