Palmerton has signed off on a blight grant extension request to assist a neighboring municipality.
Borough council on Thursday agreed to send a letter of support from the borough to the state supporting the extension of the grant for blight remediation.
Borough Manager Donna McGarry said the borough was part of a grant with Lehighton and Jim Thorpe boroughs for blighted properties.
McGarry said that Jim Thorpe is having some problems with a property it wants to demolish and needs an extension.
A vacant home at 204 Center Ave. in Jim Thorpe was slated to be torn down using part of a combined $300,000 state grant the municipality partnered with Palmerton and Lehighton borough to receive in 2001.
Jim Thorpe, though, said it didn’t have enough grant money left to cover post-demolition remediation.
In September, council approved a motion to authorize the borough manager to reapply for funds for the demolition of 204 Center Ave., along with the associated necessary restoration to 206 Center Ave. in order to complete that project.
For years, the borough has unsuccessfully tried to track down the owners of 204 Center Ave., listed as Emma & James Owen Real Estate LLC.
