Nesquehoning chief sees big things ahead for department

Nesquehoning police Chief Michael Weaver said big things are happening within the borough police department.

On Wednesday, he gave council an update on new equipment and upcoming training that will better prepare the officers for active emergencies.

Laptops for the patrol vehicles and new cellphones for the officers have been received and being implemented in the department, Weaver said.

Rifles are ordered and the department has partnered with Lehighton Ambulance to get certified in using Narcan.

Weaver said that there has been an increase in overdoses in the borough and having narcan in their patrol tools will help officers responding to these cases.

In addition, Weaver hopes to soon have new body cameras.

The borough purchased body cameras from Axon Enterprises Inc. at a cost of more than $7,100. The purchase was part of a $10,000 grant that will be used to outfit the patrolman on the streets.

Weaver said that he hopes to have everything programed and ready for use in May.

Nesquehoning will also take part in an FBI-based train the trainer course with various departments throughout the county, as well as county agencies regarding active shooter situations.

Once completed, two borough police officers will be trained as active shooter responders and will be able to train additional police in the matter.
