Tamaqua man charged with possessing child porn

A Tamaqua man is in jail on 94 felony counts of possession of child pornography filed against him Feb. 10 by agents from the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General’s Child Predator Section.

Joseph B. Kubilus, 68, of East Broad Street, is charged with having the pornography since at least May 30, according to the criminal complaint.

Agents were notified in January of three incidents involving the distribution of child pornography to an online account. An investigation traced the account to Kubilus.

On Feb. 3, agents and Tamaqua police arrived at Kubilus’s apartment and told him they had a warrant for his electronic devices. Asked if he was aware of any child pornography, Kubilus admitted to viewing and downloading child pornography for the last 5 years, agents said.

According to the criminal complaint filed against him, Kubilus said he becomes excited and pleasures himself while viewing the images.

Agents said he admitted to searching for “non nude models,” and followed links to find child pornography.

He told officers that they would likely find two to three dozen images of child pornography on his computer.

A preliminary forensics examination of the computer revealed 94 images of child pornography, 14 of which depicted indecent contact, agents said.

He was also charged with a single count of criminal use of a communication facility.

Kubilus was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Stephen Bayer, Tamaqua. He was unable to post $10,000 percentage bail and committed to the Schuylkill County Prison.
