Police: Man shot himself in Packer Twp. standoff

Pennsylvania State Police in Hazleton have released information in a standoff Thursday that resulted in a man with shooting himself in the stomach.

He was transported by Lehighton Ambulance to Lehigh Valley Medical Center in Hazleton for further medical and psychological treatment.

At 7:39 a.m., troopers from the Pennsylvania State Police at Hazleton responded to St. Matthew’s cemetery along Quakake Road in Packer Township, for an armed man wanting to harm himself.

While on scene, police said the man sustained a self-inflicted gunshot to his abdomen.

Reports from the scene are that the man was visiting the graves of his parents.

Police cleared the scene at about 2 p.m.

The Pennsylvania State Police at Troop N will continue to investigate this incident.
