Services tonight

Effort Methodist will hold a 7 p.m. Ash Wednesday service and then begin its Lenten services the following Wednesdays, with a different speaker from the congregation speaking live from the pulpit.

Preceding the Ash Wednesday service is the Lenten study centered on Max Lucado’s He Chose the Nails. That begins at 5:45 p.m. and continues through 6:45.

There will also be a Children/Youth Lenten program for ages 3 to 18.

McMichaels UMC will have an Ash Wednesday services at 6 p.m. with ashes.

Mt. Eaton Church, Saylorsburg, will hold an Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m.

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Brodheadsville, will have the following services on Ash Wednesday: 8 a.m., Mass and ash distribution; 12:10 p.m., Mass and ash distribution; 4 p.m. Mass and ash distribution; 5:30 p.m. brief service and ash distribution; 7 p.m. and ash distribution.

Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran, Kresgeville, will have Ash Wednesday services at 1 and 7 p.m. with the Imposition of Ashes and Holy Communion.

Salem UCC, Gilbert, will host the several church joint Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m. Pastor Darlene Blocker will be preaching.

St. John’s Lutheran Church, Effort, is holding an Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m.

St. Matthew’s UCC, Kunkletown, will hold a 7 p.m. Ash Wednesday service.

Zion Lutheran, Brodheadsville, will again offer Ashes to Go at 8 a.m. and at 4 p.m. in the parking lot of the church.

There will also be an Ash Wednesday service in the church at 7:30 p.m.

Soup ordering

Effort UMC announced its last soup sale for the season earlier. Offered are Creamy Chicken Corn Chowder and Pasta Fagioli with Sausage.

Orders close today. Pickup is Sunday.

Partnership class

Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church is offering a First Sunday Prayer and Fellowship event at 5 p.m., March 5.

Reusable bag needs

The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network is no longer supplying paper or plastic bags for walk-through food donations. The community is being asked to donate reusable shopping bags for some of the PVEN clients that need a little help getting their respective collections started.

Said donations can be left in the donation bin outside the food pantry.

Anyone with questions can call the PVEN at 570-992-3136.

The PVEN is located at 2336 Rt. 209, in Sciota.

In addition, the PVEN has announced an open house event set for 9 to 11 a.m., Saturday, April 22.

It is a free event, open to the public, and will include a tour of the facility, giveaways and more.

Additional information is forthcoming.

Hoagie reminder

Anyone who ordered hoagies from McMichaels is reminded that the pickup is tomorrow from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Two PV meetings

The Pleasant Valley Middle School PTO is slated to meet at 4 p.m. tomorrow.

The Pleasant Valley School District is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m.

Library track

The Western Pocono Community Library, Brodheadsville, has a walking track on the lower level. It is open 6 days a week. To verify times call the library at 570-992-7934.

Solo Fest

The Pleasant Valley Jr. High will be holding its Solo Fest from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.

Bingo night

The American Legion in Gilbert is again hosting its open-to-community bingo time on Monday. Card sales begin at 6:30 and play time at 7 p.m.

Polk Supervisors

The Polk Township board of supervisors is slated to meet at 7 p.m., Monday, at the township’s municipal building in Kresgeville.

Knit & Crochet

Zion Lutheran’s group knitters and crocheters will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday. New members are always welcome, even those who do not know how to do either needlecraft. The group members will teach folks the art of so doing with supplies on hand.

Weekend Fair

The West End Fair will host its second Winter Fair this weekend on Saturday and Sunday at the Fairgrounds in Gilbert. Saturday’s hours will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday’s from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There will be entertainment, vendors, games, food and much more.

That entertainment on Saturday includes Cramer Brothers/Fireplace Show and Jeni Hackett from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and a lantern release at 6:30 p.m. On Sunday the entertainment schedule calls for entertainment from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. by the Brian Dean Moore Band and Patrick Conklin.

Basket raffle winners will be announced at 4 p.m.

The overall event includes food, vendors, basket raffle, hay rides, petting zoo, fire barrels, S’Mores, cow flop bingo, kids games and more.

Spartan showcase

Individual speech events will be taking place at Pleasant Valley from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

SAL meeting

The Sons of the American Legion will be meeting for its monthly gathering at the Legion Post home in Gilbert beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Lenten services

Effort UMC will begin its Lenten study tonight in Wesley Hall and it will be held each Wednesday during Lent with a time of fellowship being held from 5:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. with soup and salad. The study will begin at 5:45 p.m. and go through 6:45 p.m. The study is: He Chose the Nails by Max Lucado. For the required donation of a book call the church at 570-629-1890. Lenten services will follow at 7 p.m.

St. Peter’s UMC has announced its theme of its Lenten studies which begins on March 1: Who do You say I am?

The evening begins with a carry-in (potluck) supper at 6 p.m. The service begins at 7 p.m.

The 6-week study will be led by Pastor Zabdiel Khan based on a question Jesus asked of his disciples: Who do you say I am?

Zion Lutheran, Brodheadsville, will hold two midweek Lenten worship services.

The first will be at 7 p.m., March 8, with the topic: Stations of the Cross. On March 22, the service will be a Service of Healing and Holy Communion.

Almost spring

The Pleasant Valley High School Class of 2024 will be hosting the Almost Spring Craft & Vendor Fair on March 4, in the New Gym from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free, and the concession stand will be open.

C’hill Historical

The first Chestnuthill Historical Society meeting for 2023 will be held at 6 p.m., March 15, at the township’s Park Building.
