Weekend starts with luminary walk

The sidewalks of historic Jim Thorpe were illuminated with the soft glow of luminaria for the 3rd Annual Love & Light Luminary Walk held Friday. The walk helps kick off the 30th Annual Winterfest weekend in Jim Thorpe.

“I am hoping that as the event evolves, it becomes very much about the community,” said Marissa Strohlein, family owner of Big Creek Vineyards, and coordinator of the walk.

This year, each business and organization created their own custom luminaries. Businesses could host an organization or artist and set up their luminaries in front of their shops. Many local businesses offered extended hours and discounts.

The luminary committee made small signs to place along with the luminary that included a QR code where people can scan with their phones and learn about the organization or artist and possibly make a donation.

Last year’s walk was held in honor of Lynn Highland. This year, the event was for the community.

“I want people to make luminaries for charities, lost loved ones, causes that they care about,” Strohlein said. “I’m really hoping this evolves into something where not only are you seeing beautiful luminaries; but, you’re also getting to see what matters to the people in our community.”
