Carbon Co. applies for probation dept. grant

Carbon County is applying for a $20,000 grant that would help adult probation staff better work with defendants going through the system.

On Thursday, the board of commissioners ratified the grant application for the state’s Bureau of Justice Assistance’s Smart Probation Planning Grant for $20,248.

Matt Kimmel, chief adult probation officer, said that grants are necessary to fund programs and the money would help provide funds to bring in a company to complete a training on a new set of guidelines that probation officers can use with defendants “hopefully to reduce recidivism for the county.”

The training will be completed by The Change Companies for up to 20 staff members.

In other adult probation matters, the county was awarded funding in the amount of $60,640 from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency for the reimbursement of eligible salaries of staff from July 1, 2022 through June 30.
