Two flown from Route 61 crash

Two people were seriously injured Saturday afternoon in a crash in North Manheim Township.

The incident occurred around 3 p.m. in the northbound lanes of Route 61 near the entrance to Penn State Schuylkill Campus.

Apparently the driver lost control of the sport utility vehicle veering to the right, climbing the curb impacting with a tree.

Two people were heavily entrapped. Rescue units from Schuylkill Haven and Pottsville responded to the scene extricating the two injured people.

They were treated at the scene by multiple medical units before being flown from the scene by MedEvac and PennStar helicopters to the Lehigh Valley Hospital trauma center in Allentown. The Orwigsburg fire company set up the landing zone in a nearby church parking lot. State police at Schuylkill Haven are investigating the incident.
