Martin, McAndrew, Shelton named Scholar Athletes

The Schuylkill County Chapter No. 25 of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame will announce their 2022-2023 Football Scholar Athlete at a banquet ceremony to be held on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 5 p.m. at the Schuylkill Intermediate Unit #29 in MarLin.

The 62nd annual banquet will honor Schuylkill County’s Football Scholar Athletes and their athletic and academic accomplishments.

All 14 high schools with football programs in Schuylkill County will be represented. Area student/athletes being honored include Marian’s Matt Martin, Panther Valley’s David McAndrew III, and Tamaqua’s Joshua Shelton. They will be joined by Blue Mountain’s Derek Walasavage, Mahanoy Area’s Benjamin Manley, Minersville’s Raymond Snyder Jr., Nativity’s Kyle Kenton, North Schuylkill’s Steven Davis Jr., Pine Grove’s Carter Raudabaugh, Pottsville’s Tejay Allen, Schuylkill Haven’s Ryan Sisko, Shenandoah Valley’s Zachary Slater, Tri-Valley’s Kameron Wetzel, and Williams Valley’s Logan Williard.

Following are the bios of the area student/athletes:

MATT MARTIN, MARIAN

- Martin is 5-11, 212 pounds and played fullback, halfback and linebacker for the Colts. He was a three-year starter and letterwinner. This past season, Martin was a two-way starter and captain. He ran for 1,950 career yards as a running back with 19 total touchdowns. He also shined defensively during his career, with 254 total tackles, including 28 tackles for loss, eight forced fumbles, and one interception. During his career, he made numerous all-star teams, including ones selected by the Times News, the Pottsville Republican Herald, the Hazleton Standard Speaker, the Schuylkill County Football Coach’s Association, and Eastern PA Football. He also received Player of the Week awards from both the Times News and Standard Speaker. Martin was also a Maxwell Club Mini Max award winner. A multi-sport athlete, he also participated on the baseball and wrestling teams. Martin is ranked in the top 40% of his class, and has completed dual enrollment courses in English and Psychology. A high honors student, he also participates in several school clubs, including SADD and Catholic Athletes for Christ. He is also the Senior Class Vice President. Martin is active in his community, serving in projects with the Frackville American Legion, the Food Pantry, Local Park Cleanup, and the Men of Marian Picnic committee. Martin holds multiple college acceptances and scholarships, and plans to attend college to major in Physics/Biochemistry. He is the son of Paul and Thelma Martin.

DAVID McANDREW III, PANTHER VALLEY

- McAndrew is 6-0, 170 pounds and played wide receiver, fullback and safety. He was a three-year starter and letterwinner for the Panthers. A two-time captain, McAndrew received the Schuylkill-Colonial League Sportsmanship Award this past season. He was also named to the All Academic Gold Team at Panther Valley, and received the School’s Richard Zabroski Memorial Award. A multi-sport athlete, he was a member of the Panthers’ recent District 11 championship baseball and basketball teams. He also participated on the track and field and soccer teams. Also a leader in the classroom, McAndrew is ranked second in his class of 105 students with a 4.17 weighted GPA. He is enrolled in multiple AP classes, including Chemistry, Literature, Calculus, Computer Science, and US History. For his academic effort, he was inducted to the National Honors Society, where he holds the office of Vice President. He participates in a number of school activities including Envirothon, School Newspaper, Technology Club, and Engineering Club. He is also his class Vice President. In the community, McAndrew volunteers as a Junior Firefighter. His future plans include enrolling in college to study International Business. David is the son of David and Delores McAndrew.

JOSHUA SHELTON, TAMAQUA

- Shelton is 6-1, 250 pounds and played on the offensive and defensive lines for the Blue Raiders. He was a three-year starter and letterwinner. Shelton was voted team captain during his senior year. He helped lead the way for Raider rushers on teams that qualified for the District 11 playoffs in all three of his years. Ranked in the top-third of his class, Shelton’s interests and work experience include construction and lifting weights. He volunteers in his community by giving back to youth sports as a coach of the Lehigh Valley Bucks youth all star team. His future plans include attending Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, where he plans to study HVAC. He is the son of Jamie and JoLynn Shelton.
