Jim Thorpe district considers digital sign on 903

Jim Thorpe Area School District is considering using part of its Lehigh Valley Health Network community outreach sponsorship money to purchase a digital informational sign for placement on North Street.

“I personally would like to see something similar to what Carbon Career & Technical Institute has at 13th Street,” Jim Thorpe Board President Scott Pompa said during a committee meeting Wednesday night.

Pompa said the sign could promote the district’s academic and extra-curricular accomplishments as well as advertise upcoming meetings and events.

“I’m not thinking about something extravagant that is going to light up the town, but a lot of people drive by North Street and if you’re not from Jim Thorpe, you don’t really realize the school is there.”

Jim Thorpe would be looking to put the sign near a section of Route 903 by the Mauch Chunk Trust Company.

“It’s my understanding we have a section there that they have designated to us in exchange for some of the land owned by the district that they utilize,” Pompa said.

Superintendent Robert Presley said electronic information signs have proved popular in other districts where he has worked.

“It’s a great way to get information out to the public,” Presley said. “There is not a lot of traffic that goes by the one out in front of the high school now. If you can get it out on Route 903, everyone will see it.”
