Groundhog Day

The annual tradition of celebrating Groundhog Day in the West End continues on Thursday, beginning with breakfast at Cherry’s Restaurant in Kresgeville at 7 a.m.

It will be interesting to see what the local weather prognosticator foretells.

Helping area man

Each month St. John’s Lutheran Church in Effort chooses a different nonprofit for its Bucket Fund.

For the month of February all money collected will be donated to Kyle Frable, the Kunkletown injured firefighter.

Tax help back

Salem UCC, Gilbert, will again host an AARP TaxAide time to help Seniors with income tax returns beginning Thursday, 9 a.m. to noon.

Lists for 11 weeks will be available at the site. One can sign in for whatever week one wants. To verify, call the church or 1-888-227-7669.

Legion meeting

Post 927 A members are meeting at 6:30 p.m., Thursday at the Post home in Gilbert. Guests are welcome, but only members can vote.

Senior meals

The Chestnuthill Senior center menu for Friday and next Wednesday are, respectively: baked fish or garden salad; meatloaf or Ham & Swiss.

Those wishing to eat here should call the site manager, Donna Riedel a day ahead at 570-242-6770.

All county senior centers will be closed Presidents Day, Feb. 20.

Chili benefit

There will be a chili cook-off on from 1 to 5 p.m., Feb. 4, at Polk Firehouse as a fundraiser for Austin’s Blue Line. This fundraiser goes toward scholarships for young persons seeking to go into areas of Law Enforcement.

Library event

The Western Pocono Community Library is celebrating Take Your Child to the Library Day with a special Story Time at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Families are welcome to bring their child/children to the library to browse, play in the Children’s Area, and get their own WPCL card.

Apply online or at the Circulation Desk, is the library’s request.

Museum open

The Ross Township Historical Society has announced that the museum, located at 258 Anchorage Road, Saylorsburg will be open to the public on Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There is no charge for admission. Attendees are invited to see photos, artifacts and furniture, most of which has been donated by local families representing life as it once was in the township.

Fun time set

Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church is headed to a fun time for teens and young adults when they head out for snow tubing at Blue Mountain on Saturday from 4:45 to 7 p.m.

The deadline for church youth to reserve tickets is tomorrow.

Moon walk

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center has announced a Full Moon Walk at Kettle Creek at 6:30 p.m., Feb. 4, for the opportunity to take a walk under the light of a full moon on a clear winter night.

Firefighter benefit

Polk Township firehouse will be the site of a benefit blood drive for Kunkletown firefighter Kyle Frable Kunkletown firefighter from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Feb. 5, through Miller Keystone.

Communion slated

Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Kresgeville, will celebrate Holy Communion during the 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 worship services Sunday.

Block shoot-plus

The Kunkletown Rod & Gun Club is hosting a block shoot and meat raffle on Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m., at 122 Gun Club Lane in Saylorsburg.

It is a 12-gauge shotgun event only.

The public is welcome.

Effort UMC’s Prayer Shawl group will be meeting Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

WEHA meeting

The West End Home Association will meet at 6:30 p.m., Thursday at the Legion in Gilbert. The meeting is open to all Post members. All Units of the Post will be represented. Anyone can attend and

participate.

PTO meeting

The Pleasant Valley Elementary School PTO is slated to meet from 4 to 5 p.m., next Wednesday.

Legion Auxiliary

The February meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary will be at 7 p.m. next Wednesday. Guests are welcome.

Friday Fun set

St. Matthew’s UCC, Kunkletown, is having a Friday Fun Night on Feb. 10, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The folks attending will have a meal which they themselves will pay for and then bake, decorate and bag cookies for congregation and nursing home residents. They will also make cards which will be given out on Sunday.

Spaghetti dinner

Next week Saturday, Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran church, Kresgeville, is hosting a take-put spaghetti dinner on Feb. 11.

Pickup time is 4 to 5:30 p.m. for pre-ordered dinners.

To place an order and for cost information, call 570-688-5381 by Feb. 5.

Winter Fair set

The West End Fair will host its second Winter Fair the weekend of Feb. 25 and 26 at the fairgrounds. Saturday’s hours will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There will be entertainment, vendors, games, food and much more.
