Nesquehoning making progress on blight

Some progress is being made in the fight against blight, a Nesquehoning councilwoman reported.

On Wednesday, Councilwoman Abbie Guardiani provided her monthly update on several properties that are in disrepair in the borough.

One property in question, 217 W. Catawissa St., which has been the source of much discussion over the last few months, is moving along, she said.

Guardiani said the homeowner, who lives in Maine, is now cooperating with the code enforcement officer.

“Never say never,” Guardiani said, noting that the homeowner said she would never sell the home, but after much discussion with Chip Stalega of Barry Isett and Associates, she is having a change of heart.

Guardiani said that last month, the magistrate ruled the borough could fine her $25 a day for the property, but she learned that because the woman never pleaded, the fine has not been implemented.

However, a letter was drafted and sent to the property owner and she responded that she would be willing to sign a document called a hold harmless document, which would allow the family who lives in the adjoining property to have a contractor go in and see if the roof and support wall can be fixed.

She would also agree, if the family wanted the property to fix, that she would turn over the property to them.

“She’s now agreeable to the Cabreras even entering the property. This is huge,” Guardiani said, noting that the home is deteriorating rapidly due to the weather.

It was noted that the homeowner attempted to turn it over to an investment group but was told they didn’t want it due to the condition of the property.

In other progress, Guardiani said that the home at 571 E. Center St., has been sold and was cleaned out. The property at 227-229 E. Catawissa St. was also sold and is being remediated back into a four-unit building.

Guardiani also outlined approximate a dozen homes that are on the borough’s radar that needs to be addressed.

That list includes: 129 E. Center St.; 1, 3 and 5 E. High St.; 306 W. Catawissa St.; 111 W. Catawissa St.; 151 W. Columbus Ave.; 58 E. Mill St.; 252 Stock St.; 66 E. Catawissa St.; 137 E. Catawissa St; 200 Yard St.; and 194-196 Stock St.
