Local Roundup: Results from Jan. 26

Tamaqua upset Jim Thorpe in Schuylkill League girls action Thursday, while Weatherly gained its first league win with a big comeback against Mahanoy Area.

In other action, the Marian girls remained undefeated in league play, and the Tamaqua boys swim team rolled past North Schuylkill.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Tamaqua-Jim Thorpe

Lorelei Plasha registered a double-double to help Tamaqua pull off a 42-37 Schuylkill League upset win over Jim Thorpe.

Plasha scored 10 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to help the Blue Raiders stun the Olympians and damage their league playoff hopes.

Tamaqua’s Kendle Miller led all scorers with 15 points, and also collected eight boards. Kolbe Robb chipped in with seven points and five steals, while Makayla Bartenope added nine rebounds.

Thorpe, who defeated the Raiders by 41 points in its first matchup in December, received a team-high 11 points from Mackenzie Yuhas.

Tamaqua improved to 5-14 overall and 2-9 in the league, while the Olympians fell to 9-8 and 5-6. Thorpe is now one game behind Pine Grove for the second Division 1 wildcard.

Williams Valley-Marian

Marian remained undefeated in Schuylkill League play after grinding out a 39-29 victory over Williams Valley.

The Fillies led by just six points heading into the fourth quarter, but shut down the Vikings in that final frame to preserve the victory.

Ashley Pleban paced Marian with 11 points, while Fatikha Tikhtova finished with 10.

Williams Valley received a team-high 11 points from Sage Smeltz.

The Fillies, winners of 12 in a row, are now 15-1 overall and 10-0 in the league. The Vikings, who saw their four-game win streak halted, dropped to 8-9 and 5-4.

Mahanoy Area-Weatherly

Weatherly rallied from a huge deficit to pull out a 40-37 Schuylkill League comeback victory over Mahanoy Area.

The Wreckers trailed by 15 points in the third frame, but used an 11-0 run to get back in the game. Kelly Reiner’s basket with 1:31 to play tied the contest, and Bethany Houser’s three free throws down the stretch provided the winning margin.

Houser finished with a game-high 20 points, 10 of which came during a fourth quarter where Weatherly outscored the Golden Bears by a 20-3 margin. The Wreckers, who gained their first league win of the season, also received 10 points from Reiner.

Weatherly, which ended a nine-game losing streak, is now 4-12 overall and 1-9 in the league. Mahanoy, who received 14 points from Hannah Kane, slipped to 3-14 and 1-9.

Pottsville-Lehighton

Lehighton could never recover from an early deficit and dropped a 46-36 Schuylkill League contest to Pottsville.

Maya Golden scored a game-high 16 points for the Crimson Tide, who gained an eight-point advantage after the first quarter.

The Indians - who have lost seven of their last eight - received a team-high 10 points from Taylor Bowman.

Lehighton fell to 5-13 overall and 3-8 in the league, while Pottsville upped its marks to 6-12 and 4-7.

Pen Argyl used a big third quarter to help post a 61-33 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh and end the Bulldogs’ six-game winning streak.

Ellie Wallbillich scored 11 of her 18 points during a 23-6 third frame that pushed a single-deficit lead to a commanding advantage.

Pen Argyl, winners of seven straight, received a game-high 23 points from Jill Moore.

Northern Lehigh was led by Dakota Barthold’s 11 points.

The Bulldogs slipped to 13-6 overall and 9-5 in the league, while Pen Argyl improved to 14-4 and 10-4.

Panther Vy.-N. Schuylkill

Panther Valley couldn’t slow down North Schuylkill’s trio of Kamryn Mengel, Eve Shovlini and Maddy Wetzel as the Spartans cruised to a 78-58 Schuylkill League victory.

Mengel, Shovlini and Wetzel combined for 33 of their team’s 37 first-half points to help North Schuylkill open up a double-digit lead.

The three finished with a total of 67 points, with Mengel leading the way with 25 and Shovlini and Wetzel both finishing with 21.

The Panthers received a double-double from Maddison Maynard, who tallied a team-high 20 points and also pulled down 12 rebounds. PV hit 11 three-pointers in the contest, with five coming from Natalie Vermillion.

The Spartans - riding a nine-game winning streak - are now 15-2 overall and 11-0 in the league. The Panthers are 10-8 and 4-7.

Northern Lehigh hung tough for a quarter, but Pen Argyl pulled away to earn a 65-30 Colonial League victory.

The Green Knights, who led by just a 16-13 margin after the opening eight minutes, received a game-high 15 points from Damian Tyminski. The winners also received 13 points from both Chase Kennedy and Trowne Irwin-Hill.

Connor Simms finished with a team-high nine points for the Bulldogs, who fell to 1-18 overall and 1-14 in the league.

Pen Argyl, which also won the JV game by a 46-37 scored, improved to 8-10 and 6-8.

Mount Carmel-Tamaqua

Tamaqua rallied from a halftime deficit but came up short in the end, dropping a 61-55 non-league decision to Mount Carmel.

The Blue Raiders, trailing by 14 points at the break, used a strong 22-10 third frame to narrow the gap. The Tornadoes, however, held on for the victory with a solid final quarter.

Tamaqua’s Noah Mateyak led all scorers with 21 points, while Connor Dillon chipped in with nine.

Mount Carmel (6-9) received a team-high 19 points from Garret Varano.

The loss dropped the Raiders to 8-10.

Tamaqua-North Schuylkill

Tamaqua and North Schuylkill split its Schuylkill League meet.

The Blue Raider boys rolled to a 114-28 victory, while the Spartan girls posted a 104-81 win.

Jathan Krall (200 free, 500 free), Vincenzo Valentine (200 IM, diving) and Stephen Behun (50 free, 100 free) all had multiple individual wins for Tamaqua in the boys competition, while Ethan DiBonafazio (100 Breaststroke) also added a win.

In the girls meet, the Raiders received individual wins from Gabby Blasko (100 back), and Mia Jones (diving).
