Boroughs gather to fight blight

A meeting is planned between a few municipalities to determine a way to request Carbon County implement a fee for each deed or mortgage recorded in the recorder of deeds office.

On Wednesday, Nesquehoning Councilwoman Abbie Guardiani said that the borough is holding a meeting with Lansford, Palmerton, Summit Hill, Jim Thorpe and Lehighton at 6 p.m. on Feb. 1 to discuss Act 152 of 2016, which allows for the fee to create a fund for municipalities to use to demolish condemned structures.

Carbon County currently does not participate in the program, but neighboring Schuylkill County does.

Guardiani said that the municipalities will then go to the county commissioners meeting on Feb. 23 to make their formal request.

In November, Guardiani brought the matter up, noting that the biggest problem with blight in the municipalities comes down to money.
