Local roundup: Results from Jan. 21

Panther Valley received wins from both its boys and girls basketball teams on Saturday.

The PV boys defeated Hamburg, while the girls downed Salisbury.

Elsewhere, the Marian girls extended their winning streak to double digits, while the Jim Thorpe boys outscored Nativity.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Jim Thorpe-Nativity

Jim Thorpe won its third game in a row, posting a 71-66 non-league victory over host Nativity.

Josh Spruill scored a team-high 19 points for the Olympians, who registered a season high in points. Spruill posted 10 of his points during a wild fourth quarter in which Thorpe outscored the Green Wave by a 25-21 margin.

The winners also received 17 points from Noah Rosahac, while Andrew Warner contributed 16 and Cristian Barile added 12.

The Olympians are now 8-9, while the Wave dropped to 5-10.

Hamburg-Panther Valley

Thomas Buyce poured in a game-high 21 points to help Panther Valley gain a 77-58 non-league victory over Hamburg and snap a three-game losing skid.

Buyce - who had scored just 24 points all season before Saturday’s contest - tallied 15 in the first half to help the Panthers build a double-digit halftime lead.

Chase Weaver added 17 points to the win, while Drew Kokinda collected 15 and Austin Hadley registered 13.

PV improved to 9-6, while Hamburg fell to 9-8.

In the JV game, Conner Penberth scored 16 points to help the Panthers earn a 64-38 win.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Marian-CSY

Marian’s winning streak reached 10 games after cruising to a 56-21 non-league victory over the Christian School of York.

Frankie Martinelli scored seven of her 11 points in the opening quarter as the Fillies jumped out to an early 13-point advantage.

Fatikha Tikhtova and Carly Minchhoff both scored 13 points to lead Marian, which has won by an average margin of 34.9 during its winning streak. Ashley Pleban chipped in with eight.

The Fillies upped their record to 13-1, while Christian School of York slipped to 5-3.

Salisbury-Panther Valley

Sera Robin scored a season-high 26 points to help Panther Valley roll to a 66-35 non-league victory over Salisbury.

Robin tallied 13 of her points in the first quarter as the Panthers jumped out to a 25-9 lead.

Maddison Maynard added nine of her 21 points in the opening frame and just missed posting a triple double. Maynard handed out nine assists and pulled down eight rebounds. For good measure, she also registered five steals.

PV - winners of five of its last six games - also received nine points and eight boards from Morgan Orsulak.

The Panthers improved to 10-6, while Salisbury dropped to 2-14.

Tamaqua-Tri-Valley

In a crazy back-and-forth non-league affair, Tri-Valley edged Tamaqua by a 41-36 score.

The Blue Raiders shut out the Bulldogs in the opening quarter and raced to a 13-0 advantage. Tri-Valley, however, returned the favor in the second and scored 17 unanswered points to take a halftime lead.

After Tamaqua jumped back in front, the host team used a strong final period to pull out the win.

Gionna Poletti paced the Bulldogs (13-4) with 15 points. The Raiders, now 4-13, received a double-double from Lorelei Plasha with 13 points and 15 rebounds.

Liberty rolled to an 85-33 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over visiting Pleasant Valley.

Jordan Thompson scored 18 points to power the Hurricanes (11-6), who clinched a district playoff berth with the win.

For the Bears, who dropped to 3-13, Ryan Rosenberg finished with 18 points - which included four three-pointers.
