Jim Thorpe defeats Panther Valley

Before getting into the nitty gritty of the basketball game between Jim Thorpe and Panther Valley on Tuesday night, a look at the game’s top highlight reel play is fitting.

With the buzzer ready to sound at the end of the first half, the Olympians’ Noah Rosahac pulled in a defensive rebound and without hesitating, tossed the ball like a grenade.

The three-quarters court bomb - about 75 feet - hit nothing but net.

That’s the kind of game it was. A lot went right for Jim Thorpe, and a lot went wrong for Panther Valley.

The result was a stunning 47-36 Schuylkill League victory for the Olympians.

“Stunning” is an appropriate description considering when the two teams met last month, Panther Valley won by 32 points. In addition, Jim Thorpe pulled the turnaround with leading scorer Kaiden Herron out with an injury.

“We were missing a lot of shots,” said Panther Valley coach Pat Crampsie. “I thought the effort was there, but we’re not going to win many games shooting 15-for-56.”

Rosahac, a 6-5 junior, who was sidelined with an injury the first time the two teams played, was a contributing factor in the Olympians’ win. In addition to his missile-like three-point halftime buzzer beater, he pulled down 16 of his team’s 36 rebounds. He also scored nine points.

“Noah coming back really helped us,” said Jim Thorpe coach Jason McElmoyle.

But it wasn’t only Rosahac’s play that impressed McElmoyle

“I thought it was a complete team game,” he said. “I thought our guys played great. I’m so proud of what they did tonight. Every little detail that we talked about in practice, they went out and they executed.”

“Even when they made a run and came back, we didn’t fold.”

The Panthers (8-5, 3-5) had a pair of runs that Jim Thorpe had to answer. The initial one happened in the second period when Panther Valley reeled off nine straight points to take a slim lead. Then in the third quarter, PV scored seven straight points to once again pull in front.

Both times Jim Thorpe (6-9, 3-5) had an answer, however.

Leading by four points with two minutes remaining in the game, the Olympians delivered again - this time at the free throw line - as they converted eight of nine down the stretch.

Three players McElmoyle singled out for their contributions were Christian Barile and Jasper DiSanto, - who he felt did great against PV’s guards - as well as Josh Spruill, who McElmoyle said “is just playing phenomenal.”

Spruill was the top scorer for the Olympians with 13 points. Andrew Warner also played well for JT, finishing with 11.

“It’s a tough pill to swallow,” Cramspie said about the loss. “But we have a lot of basketball left, and we have to regroup.”

WEAVER TOPS PV ... Leading the way for the Panthers was “Mr. Consistency” Chase Weaver, who netted 13 points. Michael Pascoe and Stephen Hood had eight points each.

NUMBERS ... The Olympians outrebounded PV 36-27. For the Panthers, Stephen Hood had 11 rebounds. At one point in the second quarter, he hauled in six boards in a row.

JV GAME ... Jim Thorpe won the opener, 47-35. The top scorer for the Olympians was Ben Goldberg with 17 points, while Matt Domski had 15. For the Panthers, Hayden Goida had 10 and Brody Breiner added eight.
