Local Roundup: Results from Jan. 14

The Marian boys and Palmerton girls remained undefeated in league play with wins on Saturday.

The Colts downed Shenandoah to stay perfect in Schuylkill League Division 3, while the Blue Bombers defeated Saucon Valley to keep their record spotless in the Colonial League.

Other weekend winners included both Northwestern squads, the Jim Thorpe girls, and Tamaqua’s swim teams.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Palisades-Northwestern

Northwestern evened its record after posting a 46-24 Colonial League victory over Palisades.

Gavin Nelson scored a team-high 12 points for the Tigers, who are now 7-7 overall and 5-5 in the league.

Northwestern, who also received eight points from Cayden Fitch, limited the Pirates to just seven second-half points.

Mikey Sessinger registered a game-high 13 points for the Pirates (2-12; 1-10).

Marian-Shenandoah Valley

A strong second half allowed Marian to rally for a 52-45 Schuylkill League victory over Shenandoah Valley.

Jesse Rodino scored 16 of his team-high 20 points over the final two quarters to help the Colts come back from an eight-point halftime deficit.

The win allowed Marian to remain perfect in league play, improving to 6-0. Overall, it sports a 7-6 mark.

Frank Valente contributed 16 points to the Colts’ cause, while Jesse Ramirez added 10.

For the Blue Devils, now 4-10 and 2-4, Brian Rivera finished with a game-high 22 points.

Pottsville-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe and Pottsville battled to three overtimes, with the Crimson Tide pulling out a 55-53 Schuylkill League victory.

The two teams were knotted at 36-36 at the end of regulation, tied 42-42 after the first overtime and deadlocked at 47-47 after two extra periods.

Pottsville’s TJ Allen hit a game-winning layup in the third OT to up the Tide’s record to 8-6 overall and 5-2 in the league.

Amaree Bainbridge paced the winners with 16 points,

For the Olympians, who fell to 5-9 and 2-5, Andrew Warner and Noah Rosahac both finished with 16 points. Teammate Ben Goldberg ended with 11.

Schuylkill Haven-Weatherly

Schuylkill Haven remained tied for first in Schuylkill League Division 2 by posting a 70-46 victory over Weatherly.

The Hurricanes (12-3 overall; 5-1 league) had five players reach double-digit scoring, with Travis Richie leading the way with 18 points.

The Wreckers, who actually led by a 16-12 margin after the first quarter, received a team-high 12 points from Ian McLaurin.

The loss dropped Weatherly to 1-12 and 0-6.

Northwestern-Palisades

Northwestern had no trouble with Palisades, rolling to a 45-6 Colonial League victory.

Paige Sevrain finished with a game-high 15 points as the Tigers won their 12th game in a row.

Cara Thomas and Maci Fisher each added eight points to help Northwestern improve to 13-1 overall and 9-1 in the league.

Palmerton remained undefeated in Colonial League play after gaining a 41-21 victory over Saucon Valley.

The Blue Bombers held the Panthers to just seven second-half points to pull away and improve to 13-1 overall and 10-0 in the league.

Hannah Barry led the way for Palmerton with 14 points, while Bethie Morgan contributed 12.

For Saucon (5-9; 3-7), Allison Cort registered nine points.

Pottsville-Jim Thorpe

Mackenzie Yuhas scored a game-high 19 points to help power Jim Thorpe to a 50-34 Schuylkill League victory over Pottsville.

Yuhas posted 13 of her points in the first half as the Olympians built an eight-point advantage.

Brianna Snisky finished with 12 points for Thorpe, which improved to 7-5 overall and 3-4 in the league. Teammate Kiara Ginopolas chipped in with nine on three three-pointers.

For the Tide, now 4-9 and 3-4, Alex Blum tallied 12 points.

SWIMMING

Saucon Valley-Tamaqua

Tamaqua posted a sweep of Saucon Valley.

The Blue Raider boys rolls to a 116-38 victory, while the girls pulled out a narrow 89-87 win.

Jathan Krall (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle), Stephen Behun (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle) and Vincenzo Valentine (diving, 100 breaststroke) all had multiple individual wins to key the boys victory. Other firsts came from Jack Tharp (200 IM) and Brandon Long (100 backstroke).

In the girls meet, Savannah Wilson (200 IM, 100 butterfly) had a pair of individual firsts to lead Tamaqua. Other winners included Lexi Buchala (200 freestyle), Mia Jones (diving) and Lily McNutt (100 breaststroke).
