Slatington officials thank police

Slatington Mayor Jeralyn Schoch thanked the Slatington Police Department at Monday’s Borough Council meeting.

“I wanted to thank the police department again for stepping up since we don’t have a police chief, for covering shifts and doing a great job,” Schoch said.

Council President Thomas Bartholomew echoed the mayor’s words.

“We all appreciate the work of our police department.”

The previous chief, Dennis Long, resigned in November for personal reasons.

Sgt. Deron Dorwood, who attended the council meeting, thanked everyone for their support and shared how the police raised money.

“Every year, we in the police department do a no-shave in November and December,” Dorward said. “The officers donate money. The officers don’t necessarily have to grow a beard. If they just want to donate, they can. This year they raised a few hundred dollars.”

For the last three years, Slatington and Walnutport police departments pooled their resources and the funds were given to people in need. This year, the money raised will be given to someone in Slatington Borough.
